Adolescents' participation in activities is associated with lower risky substance use. The results suggest that participation in activities, even when accounting for personality change, protect against subsequent risk.

Participation in activities; Participation in sports; Conscientiousness (items derived from the NEO-PI-R, ten items were taken from the three different conscientiousness facets: self-discipline, achievement striving and dutifulness); Risky substance use (three items including measures of binge drinking, getting drunk and illegal drug use); Gender; Socioeconomic status; Pubertal timing as control variables.
(1) ‘‘About how often in the last 6 months have you had more than 5 alcoholic drinks on one occasion?’’; (2) ‘‘About how often in the last 6 months have you been drunk?’’; and (3) ‘‘About how often in the last 6 months have you used illegal drugs?’’
These items were measured on an eight-point scale from 1 ‘‘none’’ to 8 ‘‘31 or more times’’.
