Rather than introducing youth to the larger civic and political world, volunteering prompted 10 of the youth interviewed to turn inward and strengthen their connections with other youth like themselves. For 12 of the youth interviewed, their volunteer work facilitated a sense of attachment to marginalized communities on the peripheries of their hometowns.

The youth interviewed had volunteered at nursing homes, Habitat for Humanity† worksites, peer counseling hotlines, after-school programs and camps, a science museum, the Red Cross, search and rescue groups, community radio and arts programs, hospitals, urban renewal programs, tutoring programs, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth groups, a pro-life agency, and a city youth council.
