providing access to sport to youth excluded from the sport system
soziale Inklusion
The focus groups with the social workers show a gap between those who screen social exclusion at a local level (community services) and the sport system. Within this gap, the social workers of the NGO act as a linkage among diverse territorial actors in all the three cities: “We think about our NGO as a bridge, the alliance with the network is fundamental. The sports societies and signaling entities are not connected with each other” (Coordinator, Rome). [...] The agencies (schools, social services, community housing, etc.) that generally deal with social exclusion at a local level—and that are therefore in contact with people who remain excluded from the sport system—are rarely tied with sport clubs, at least in the Italian context. This gap may be overcome by introducing social workers who could bridge diverse systems serving youth access to sport.
Beschreibung der Aktivität
sports-based program implemented by an Italian NGO in Milan, Rome and Naples
The program intends to promote social inclusion through sport for youth living in conditions of socio-economic vulnerability. Tutors and local coordinators involve a territorial network of social actors (schools, parishes, social services, and communities) to reach youth. Together with the youth and their family the local coordinator finds a sport society suitable for the youth. The tutor is involved during the phase of integration into the sport society and accompanies the youth throughout the entire sport process.
Italien
The program engages approximately 300 children (150 in Rome, 80 in Milan, and 60 in Naples) aged between 4 and 18.
The youth involved in the study were aged between 12 and 16 years, with an average age of 14.

Evaluierung der Aktivität
Data from interviews and focus groups with youth involved in the program (21), parents (15), sport coaches (9), and the social workers of the NGO (15) were triangulated with the aim of exploring how social workers promoted inclusion through sport. Data were analyzed in a top–down thematic analysis.
