increased support for sport coaches through cooperation with social workers

institutionelle Zusammenarbeit

Sport workers agree that keeping together “the pieces of the puzzle” (Sports coach 1, Naples) of the youth’s life is fundamental for social inclusion, and the role of social workers is recognized in taking charge of this area of work. Sport operators described how significant receiving this kind of support is; indeed, social workers are described as fundamental resources for sport coaches who can share part of their relational work with them. "C. (the tutor) is present. It’s an important role because the society and coaches struggle to keep up with the children, they struggle to take care of that part that goes beyond training. So, it’s like having a person that take[s] care…because otherwise coaches and the society alone struggle." (Sports coach 2, Naples) All the aforementioned outputs suggest that the cooperation with social workers is a notable resource for sport workers who may be unable to take care of youths’ emotional and social fragilities.

Beschreibung der Aktivität

Jugendsozialarbeit
sports-based program implemented by an Italian NGO in Milan, Rome and Naples
The program intends to promote social inclusion through sport for youth living in conditions of socio-economic vulnerability. Tutors and local coordinators involve a territorial network of social actors (schools, parishes, social services, and communities) to reach youth. Together with the youth and their family the local coordinator finds a sport society suitable for the youth. The tutor is involved during the phase of integration into the sport society and accompanies the youth throughout the entire sport process.
Italien
The program engages approximately 300 children (150 in Rome, 80 in Milan, and 60 in Naples) aged between 4 and 18.
The youth involved in the study were aged between 12 and 16 years, with an average age of 14.
