learning new skills an competencies through sport

Erwerb von fach- und bereichsspezifischen Kompetenzen

The functional dimension refers to the ability to learn new skills and competencies through sport. For instance, a participant from Naples explains: “When I used to train at the beginning, I was very insecure, I didn’t believe in myself (…) I’m proud of what I have been able to achieve. I have learned to become more determined and consistent.” Results highlight several skills promoted by the sport experience; however, these outcomes are anchored to the sport experience itself rather than being the consequence of social workers’ intervention; youths do not mention the presence of social workers as a determinant of such outcomes, nor do social workers report a direct investment on youths’ skill development. These results can be explained in different ways. On the one hand they could be considered as direct outcomes of the implicit and invisible processes activated in sport [...]. On the other hand, there are several studies that highlight the relevance of sport coaches in promoting youth skills [...].

Beschreibung der Aktivität

Jugendsozialarbeit
sports-based program implemented by an Italian NGO in Milan, Rome and Naples
The program intends to promote social inclusion through sport for youth living in conditions of socio-economic vulnerability. Tutors and local coordinators involve a territorial network of social actors (schools, parishes, social services, and communities) to reach youth. Together with the youth and their family the local coordinator finds a sport society suitable for the youth. The tutor is involved during the phase of integration into the sport society and accompanies the youth throughout the entire sport process.
Italien
The program engages approximately 300 children (150 in Rome, 80 in Milan, and 60 in Naples) aged between 4 and 18.
The youth involved in the study were aged between 12 and 16 years, with an average age of 14.

Qualitative Interviewbefragungen (persönlich), Fokusgruppen
Data from interviews and focus groups with youth involved in the program (21), parents (15), sport coaches (9), and the social workers of the NGO (15) were triangulated with the aim of exploring how social workers promoted inclusion through sport. Data were analyzed in a top–down thematic analysis.
