integration of youths from marginalized communities in sport clubs

soziale Inklusion

A tutor, for instance, described several difficulties encountered within one sport society in Rome after having integrated Roma children. Within the sport club, some parents showed resistance and prejudice toward these new children. In this case, the social worker specifically dedicated her time to create a welcoming micro-environment for the children: “But then it changed, we worked for that, it was a process. It was not a standardized process, not codified so to speak, but it was a natural process that took place on a daily basis through our presence” (Tutor, 2 Rome). [...] We see from this specific case that cultural barriers and prejudices can arise within the sport clubs. Social workers can abate these obstacles through tailored actions developed day-by-day and case-by-case accordingly with the specific challenges emerging from the context. Again, we see that the presence of the tutor was essential in order to achieve this outcome.Again, we see that the presence of the tutor was essential in order to achieve this outcome.

Beschreibung der Aktivität

Jugendsozialarbeit
sports-based program implemented by an Italian NGO in Milan, Rome and Naples
The program intends to promote social inclusion through sport for youth living in conditions of socio-economic vulnerability. Tutors and local coordinators involve a territorial network of social actors (schools, parishes, social services, and communities) to reach youth. Together with the youth and their family the local coordinator finds a sport society suitable for the youth. The tutor is involved during the phase of integration into the sport society and accompanies the youth throughout the entire sport process.
Italien
The program engages approximately 300 children (150 in Rome, 80 in Milan, and 60 in Naples) aged between 4 and 18.
The youth involved in the study were aged between 12 and 16 years, with an average age of 14.
